I'm new to this forum, but wonder about adding Rice Cooker to the Title? In an effort to eat whole grains, which take longer to cook, I bought one. The instructions are minimal, so there's been LOTS of trial and error. Success in cooking depends upon the grain type and amount of liquid used, not so much on the cooker itself. I upgraded to a rice cooker with a timer; about $40 at WM;and use it quite frequently, since the grains and liquid can be put in hours ahead of time. There's also the multi-tasking option of the steamer basket; which I haven't tried, yet! Would love to learn what others are doing with it.

I love my rice cooker, but you know, it's nearly directly opposite of the slow cooker - where the slow cooker cooks slowly, the rice cooker cooks fast! There have been threads on using the rice cooker, and if you type "rice cooker" into the search bar above and select Cookbooks in the dropdown, you will find cookbooks that members have created of rice cooker recipes. I try to remember to put "rice cooker" in the title of recipes I've posted, to help people find them.
I cook tapioca, oatmeal, grits and wheat grains in my cooker. Barley does not do as well - it seems to foam up a lot and make a mess, although I am sure it would be fine in a larger cooker - mine is only 3 cups.
If you have not yet found it, try to get The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook by Beth Henspberger. I found it at my library and later bought it. I believe it is now available in paperback. It is the single best source of information on the rice cooker, types of rice, recipes.
