Hi everyone! Forgive me for not putting out the welcome mat earlier. We have just moved into our new home in NC and finally got our internet access hooked up last night. I am still unpacking, but will try to check in here each day.

My heritage is German on my mother's side of the family(many of my mother's relations spoke only in German). Unfortunately for me, many of them lived far away or died when I was very young, so I did not learn to speak German directly from them. I grew up eating German foods my mother made and was lucky enough to have lived in Germany while my DH was stationed in Bonn. When my German aunt passed away, I inherited her vast collection of recipes many of which are German. I also collected numerous recipes while living in Germany and have slowly been sharing them here on Zaar. I am quite fluent in cooking terms and food related terms, so if you need help translating a recipe from German to English or need to know what the equivalent ingredient would be in German, I may well be able to help you out. My husband speaks German fluently, so if I am at a loss, I can often turn to him as well.

Although my knowledge of German foods is strong, my written German is quite poor outside the realm of cooking terms, so bear with me. I can often understand written German, but I will probably respond in English unless I my DH is handy to offer corrections to my grammar. icon_lol.gif

So please, get to chatting about German cooking and sharing German recipes. I will make a few posts to get the ball rolling - jump in anytime. icon_smile.gif

    Heather,

I donīt know whether you would be able to help me, my name is John Jennings and I live in Peru. For two years I have been designing and producing a new cooking site for professionals, why another one, because when I started to llok for information I could not find firstly all the terms needed and secondly the vast majority of sites are in one language only. My site has been produced in English and spanish, and I am currently adding German, French and Italian. Why is the site different well so far it has 28 sections all with terms and descriptions for , Cooking, Foods, utensils, Breads, cakes, puddings but my site is not a recipe site. What I need is someone who can check some of my German translations and also add more.
If you are interested please contact me.

    Regards

    John Jennings

Thank you for your prompt reply, I too lived in Berlin, in Pankow and then in Hohen Neundorf, but I only learnt german to live and do business, not cooking. Anyway I will prepare a file to send to you so that you can see what I am attempting to do and if you can help, then I would appreciate it.

    Regards

    John

I am still here Koechin and check the forum everyday.... but there are always more questions for the German part of this forum.

This post ofHeather is an old one (look at the date, 2005) from the time the forum started and she was a host at that time.

Heather,I donīt have an email address for you but somehow I got to a blog spot which appearedto be yours and I sent a file there. As I have heard nothing back from you I assume maybe this was an error.

Also Iwould just like confirmation that as you are a moderator for RecipeZaar, obviously you could be competition although I have not found a dictionary on their site

    Regards

I do have a blog (the link is on my Recipezaar "about me" page, which you can find by clicking my name). If you are worried that someone on a blog is using my name... if the blog you saw was Lavender Blue, then that is my blog and is legitimate. I have not posted any dictionary at all on my blog.

I am not exactly certain what you are asking about though regarding a dictionary posted there and competition.. could you perhaps clarify? If you sent any files to me at my blog, chances are the spam filter zapped it, as I do not accept any files, only text messages. As to your question above about translating, I would not be able to undertake such a project at this time, I'm sorry.

I am no longer a mod for Recipezaar, although I was a very long time ago (the date of this post was originally from back in 2005),but was unable to continue due to a hectic real life schedule.

Lol - this is a very very old post, I only just noticed the questions from John tonight. Sorry for the long delay in responding, but I haven't been in this forum in a while to check it.

I moved years ago, I have moved back and forth to Europe again since then, and have already moved another time after that.. and will soon again sometime this year. I guess you can see why I was unable to keep up as a forum host - I move way too often. icon_biggrin.gif
