There are tons of versions of German apple cake, I've only got one posted at the moment, which I adopted, during the great Zaar adoption. Rahmapfelkuchen (Apple and Rum Custard Cake)
recipe #6469, should you decide to try it I'd really appreciate some feedback, as I haven't gotten around to making it yet myself.

Apfel Torte!
This has a wonderful crust/which is the same as the topping. and is called STREUSSEL in German. It is one of my favorites. Serve with whipped cream.
1 1/2 c butter, melted
2 c sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tsp vanilla
zest of 1 lemon
4 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. make a well in the center and add all the rest. mix all with your hand until combined. place in refrigerator for one hour.
In the meantime peel and core 15 med. size apples. I like to shredd them with my coarse blade in my processor. Otherwise slice them as thin as possible. Toss them with 1 T lemon juice.
Combine 1 c sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon or apple pie spice
Toss this with the apples
Remove your dough from the fridge. Get out a large (12") Spring form pan. Use about 1/2 of the dough or more, to pat into the bottom and up the sides of your pan. Don't be skimpy!!
Now place your apple mixture into the pan. Brake up the remaining dough into med. size clumps, with your fingers, and place all over the top of the apple mix. (These are the STREUSSEL)
Bake at 350* 1 hour and 15 min. aprox. You may want to turn the oven to 375* or the last 15 min. to lightly brown the top. I like to place the spring form pan on a cookie sheet or place heavy foil around the bottom, in case of leakage.
Enjoy, Ingrid/Koechin
