    Tips for Keeping Bread Fresh and/or Shipping It!

    Hey Ya'll!

    Wanted to get everyones Tip / Tricks on Keeping Your Bread Fresh! ( Bread Box, Tupperware....Thoughts?)

    My little sister is in college and I've been trying to help with the adjustment by sending out home made bread baskets. I've discovered that it's key to let it cool completely (duh) - and not to put it in the fridge before sending it to avoid moisture building up - and I use gladware to package it up. Anyone else have great luck storing / sending bread?

    Salt is a natural preservative and if used in a little higher proportion than the recipe calls for (not to oversalt, but to kick in the preservative effect) (do NOT let it come into contact with the yeast when putting into the recipe), it will help it's shelf life. Your other ideas about keeping it away from moisture are great. As another suggestion, you might want to try out some flatbreads. I don't know why, but they seem to keep longer for me. By the way, does your sister know how wonderful you are?? icon_biggrin.gif

    Did you know that sourdough breads keep much longer than regular commercial yeast breads? Contrary to popular belief, they don't all taste very 'sour', either!

    I agree with the higher salt content. I also recommend wrapping the bread in paper towels before you package it to absorb even more moisture. It may cause a little drying, but that is preferable to molding. icon_wink.gif

    Wow! Thanks everybody! That helps a lot - I'm going to up the salt a bit and test out some flat breads. If anyone has any ideas - I'm always up for trying something new!
