Apple Varieties and Their Uses
I have gathered this list from a variety of sources. I bet you didn't know there were so many types of apples! Even so, some varieties may be missing. Also, since this info comes from several places, there may be an occasional typo or error.

Just as a note Crispin and Mutsu (or Mutzu) are the same apple. And one of my favourites!  They were bred in Japan, and named Mutsu. They are marketed under that name in Canada. However, they were re-named Crispin to be marketed in the U.S.
And just to pick a fight  I have to say I think Golden Delicious and Red Delicious are truly lousy apples; overly sweet, bland and with a nasty cottony texture.

Here in Manitoba, I planted a Goodland Apple tree just about three weeks ago. They say its a medium-sized apple that is crisp, juicy, tender and aromatic, good for eating and baking. My neighbour planted another apple tree, I think it was called the Norland. These are hardy for zone 3, that's us.

Doesn't bother me!
My mom used to buy those 5# bags of delicious type apples and pack them in my school lunches when I was a kid. Talk about mealy! I hated them! Made me think for awhile that I hated apples in general, but I eventually found others I liked (when I was old enough to shop for my own food or pick my own apples!).
My favorite is probably the winesap. There are a lot of orchards around here, but fewer of them are growing those, much to my dismay! I hope they don't stop!

I saw that when I was making the list. Just for being alphabetical it is really added twice so people can find it easily. There is one other one on the list that is a duplicate, but I already forgot which one. It was an apple I was less familiar with.

I'm not alone! I was beginning to think that I was the only person on Earth who finds Delicious apples vile (Red especially)! DH likes them for some reason, so I keep finding them taking up precious space in my produce drawers
Now that I think about it, grocery store Macintoshes are pretty icky/mealy too (living in New England, I've been spoiled by all the pick-your-own apples out there!  )

Yeah, I agree McIntoshes are over-rated too. They ARE very good when they are fresh off the tree, but they really don't store at all well, although just about every one you buy at the grocers has been stored. And when you cook with them, they don't collapse so much as just vanish.
Haven't seen Winesaps around here. We get some really excellent Russets, though.
