In her recipe for Seafood Gumbo, papergoddess referred to an ingredient called clam boil. Does anyone know what this is, and where I would find it?

Hi, there, Scouter. I don't know where you live but I'm around Chicago, Ill., and Crab Boil is sold in the seasoning isle of just about any grocery store. The stuff I have is McCormick's, and I can't tell you what's in it because it comes in a bag, and I cut it open and put it in a jar, so I lost the ingredients. But I can tell you that it has mustard seed, a bunch of other seeds, crumbled bay leaf, etc., etc....

It is sold in a box, and there is a plastic bag inside. It is called McCormick's Crab and Shrimp Boil.

    Hope this helps.

Crab boil is cajun seasonings that are used for boiled seafood. Some can be spicy so be careful.

If you can find it, try Zateran's (could be spelled wrong) it is AUTHENTIC!

Thanks papergoddess, I was looking in the wrong aisle. I thought is would be with ethnic foods and seasonings. I'll check the spice aisle tomorrow.

Kari, I did not see in with the Zatarain's (first place I looked, love their mixes). Perhaps my stores just don't carry their crab boil, or maybe it's with the McCormicks, not with the rice dishes.

Mili, not that daring to try making it first time out. I have to keep things simple so that the Scouts are willing to try making it on their own.

I do demo cooking at Scouting events, trying to convince as many as possible that cooking is not a 6-letter word (hotdog, smores, etc.). This fall we are doing the last of our river themes - Huck Finn will finish out the series. I try to match the demos with the theme, thought of gumbo and fried catfish. Still looking for more ideas.
