Broil

Technically, to cook food directly under of above the heat source, e.g. in an oven directly under the gas or electric heat or on a barbeque grill. In the US the term is the term is typically used to describe cooking food in the oven directly under the gas or electric heat element and it is very hot. You "broil" a steak like this. In other parts of the world this is typically called "grilling."
